A brawl between players from the Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays became a top trend early last week as video of the melee lit up social feeds. Males, ages 18-44, drove this trend with negative sentiment for Bautista as many fans felt that he was at fault for the brawl.

 
 

2016 Webby Awards Kim Kardashian Makes Her Mark on the 2016 Webby Awards (Peaked on 5/17)
The Webby Awards highlights the best in online media and is known for its irreverent rule of limiting winners to six word acceptance speeches. This year, Kim Kardashian made headlines for winning the “Break the Internet” award. Her speech, “Nude selfies until I die,” generated significant online buzz and made her a top trending topic for the week with interest split evenly along gender lines.

 
 

Robin Wright House of Cards’ Actress Robin Wright Fought for Equal Pay (Peaked on 5/18)
Equal Pay Day sparked a series of Taykey trending topics back in April as women commemorated the notable day with a slew of social posts highlighting the disparity in gender compensation. So, it’s no surprise that a famous actress would capture attention for demanding, and winning, equal pay with her male costar. Robin Wright who plays the fictional First Lady in the popular Netflix series, House of Cards, revealed how she fought to be paid the same as her co-star, Kevin Spacey, during an event hosted by the Rockefeller Foundation. The trend was driven by older women, ages 55 and up, who viewed the actress with a positive sentiment.

 
 

Egypt Air Egyptair Flight Disappears From Radar (Peaked on 5/19)
Sad news of the disappearance of an EgyptAir flight en route from Paris to Cairo carrying 66 passengers became a trending topic last Thursday. The trend skewed slightly more male and older, ages 55+, and there was a very negative sentiment around the topic of “terrorist attack” as the inconclusive nature of the incident led people to suspect it could be an act of terrorism that brought the plane down.

 
 

Morley Safer Morley Safer Passes Away at 84 (Peaked on 5/19)
Legendary 60 Minutes correspondent Morley Safer passed away just a week after announcing his retirement from the news program after 46 years. The Emmy-winning newsman was one of the first reporters to convey the brutality of the Vietnam War to American TV viewers. This trend resonated with adults 35-55+ and those discussing Safer’s death were also engaged with other television and news related topics.
